Petrol Lawnmowers have long been seen as the “old school” of tending to lawns, however, in recent years, the petrol versions have had somewhat of a rebirth, with newer models making the job of cutting a mid to large lawn much easier than their electric counterparts.
It is widely accepted that the finish from a petrol lawn mower is of a better quality than when using an electric one – this is due to several factors, and can differ between models. Some of the things you will want to know before making your choice are :
Is the mower self propelled?
Most are, and they need to be with the weight being high due to the engine – but do double check!
Does the mower have a grass collection box?
Again, most do, but check – you don’t want to be going round afterwards raking up the clippings. Some mowers even come with a grass mulcher attached now!
Rotary or cylinder mower?
A rotary mower is great for a normal lawn – striped effects can still be integrated if the rotary mower has a rear roller. A cylinder mower is generally accepted as being the better of the two for a striped surface, and also produces a closer, neater cut and a smoother finish.
You will also need to be mindful of the running costs of having a petrol lawnmower. Whilst you will save on electricity, you will need to make sure you keep a stock of fuel. Most mowers run on a 2 stroke fuel, which is widely available from all mower stockists and garages.
